Tangled Web: A Special Report
A photograph published as part of the three-day series "Tangled Web" depicted a man whose image was used on an online dating site without his permission. The man in the photo (pictured here) was not Tim Swinea, the subject of the series, and was not involved in the other events described in the series. Other photos in the series depicted Swinea in a courtroom, with his fiancÚ and at Dallas Cowboys Stadium. We apologize for any confusion the photograph's publication might have caused.
About this report
Reporter Shereen Skola began to investigate the background of Tim Swinea after he was implicated in the sudden closure of a Wausau-area day care center in December. She uncovered a history of elaborate deceptions and multiple reported victims. In this three-day series, Skola documents the accusations against Swinea and the shattered lives he's left behind.
One part of the story will be posted each day beginning Saturday evening, June 22, through Monday evening, June 24.
Part 1: Penny Schoenke of Menasha tells the story of how a relationship with a man she met online started as a dream come true but evolved into a nightmare.
Part 2: Schoenke's life takes a harrowing turn as Swinea convinces her that she and her children are in danger and persuades them to flee with him to Texas and Oklahoma to seek the protection of federal agents.
Part 3: Swinea's criminal history in Wisconsin starts 16 years ago in Wausau and is far from over.
