The Packers didn't want to wait to see if running back Brandon Saine could come back from his knee injury.

They released him today, according to agent Joe Flanagan, while Saine was in the middle of rehabbing from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, an injury he sustained on Oct. 14 against Houston.

They will have to waive Saine injured because he failed his physical. That means he will be entitled to certain benefits under the collective bargaining agreement. He was not expected to be fully recovered until this summer.

The move comes on the same day the Packers had running back Cedric Benson in for a visit. The Packers put Benson through a medical exam to see how his foot injury has progressed.

Benson had a Lisfranc injury on Oct. 7 against Indianapolis. He originally was placed on the new injured reserve list, designated for return but then never was able to return.

Earlier today, Benson tweeted: "Wonderful meeting with the pack! Never thought I'd say it felt good to be in Green Bay!!"

It was unclear whether that meant Benson would be re-signed.
